To the one and ONLY Chris Gaffney:

I am heartsick to hear the news. As someone who has danced with cancer and chemo (and won, so far), I know some of what you may be feeling about now.

A friend and fellow survivor told me early on to remember that the cancer would be harder on those who loved me than it was on me. He was right.

Remember those who are in your corner, draw strength from their love (and ours) when the head and body says no more, and your heart will carry you forward.

Hang tough amigo. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Sending mucho healing energy your way now, and always. I don't know you personally, but have met you through mutual friends, Amber, Melissa & DG. I fell in love with "Walkin' On My Dreams" and your voice is absolutely beautiful and perfect for that song. I'm reading the book, The Secret, and just finished reading about two people (didn't know each other) who both were diagnosed with cancer and had the same recoveries. They both kept stress out of their lives, both watched funny movies every day and just laughed, laughed, laughed. The disease left their bodies because they would not own it. The woman who was diagnosed had this to say, "I truly believed in my heart, with my strong faith, that I was already healed. Each day I would say, "Thank you for my healing." On and on she went..."Thank you for my healing." She said she believed in her heart she was healed and saw herself as if cancer was never in her body.

I'll be praying for you and for this same strength. Keep and see the faith.

Was sorry to hear of your problems, but happy that you have such friends as you do to help you through this deal. Have always been an admirer since I first heard you with Dave Alvin, and then the Hacienda Brothers. Recall your show in Fort Worth last year and the surprise of having Little Stevie Cruz in the audience - the other half of the song "If Daddy Don't Sing Danny Boy" - the Fort Worth "boy", nearly unknown, who won over Barry McGuigan, the World Champion Featherweight in the horrid June heat of 1986 in Las Vegas with ringside temperatures 109 degrees.
Not sure who was more excited, you, or Stevie. What a great show.

Know that all your friends and fans are pulling for you, praying for you.

Don't know if you remember, but I have had some similar problems (mine colon cancer with spread to liver, and I'm still here after 8 years).

Now, keep your chin down and your protect yourself at all times!

CHRIS, hello again. You've been on my mind and in my heart since speaking about old times with Chris Gomez over a month ago. Gomez and I had also spoken about Gloria Nichols whom you might remember from the Phantom Herd days and then Gary Roach called and as we were talking about you, I told him that she had just passed away. All this and my sister's Berta and Kathy both recently going through breast cancer and surviving, brought me to a place where I needed to be... remembering how precious the gift of life is and what a blessing family and friends are. My friend David Hocking's doctor told him year's ago that he had throat cancer and he would never talk again. David's still yelling at people and thanking God every day. Chris, today you've been added to the prayer list at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa and I know personally many will be praying for you and your family. God saved my life also and you can read my testimony at my blog. I'm praying God will heal you Chris and that you can continue to be a blessing to Julie and your children and all those whose beautiful notes I've read here. God Bless. d.w.backstrom

Hello Chris Gaffney, fans, friends, and supporters,

Or as I like to call us, The Cold Hard Club. Tonight, Tuesday, April Fool's Day (perfect), on Tucson's community radio station, KXCI, 91.3 FM, www.kxci.org, Al Perry will be playing a few choice, and I believe very rare, live Gaffney tracks. He will also be doing a pitch for Chris and the HelpGaff.com website. Al Perry is a local Tucson roots rock musician and is commonly referred to as "Tucson's legendary king of cow punk." (Al would be unhappy I said that). His show is called Al Perry's Clambake and it's on from 6-8PM west coast time (same as Tucson time in the summer). If you listen to internet radio and would like to listen in, there's a link on the left side of the KXCI homepage that says "listen now."

To a man who has been known to "take a bullet for the team" - and who IS the official "coolest guy in Orange County" we are rooting for you, and sending all our love.
We've been reading a lot of messages on here that hint that you make some real good pancakes, and you can tell by looking at Walter that he loves pancakes! So let's get together when you get through this and have some of those pancakes!

Gaff and fans/friends/family,

Update:
The KXCI/Tucson radio thing worked out well this past Tuesday. Al Perry talked about you on his Clambake show and The Rose Lady, hostess of the Rosie's Rhythm Room show, has also taken up the cause. Probably some of the other DJ's as well.

There's lots of Gaff love out there.

I just noticed my message is going to be right next to Linda and Diane. Cool!

I heard you are not inclined too get on a computer so I hope someone is relaying all these massages, I mean messages of love to you.

Kind of a sick thought....but there is this australian minister guy who has no arms and no legs. But he has one foot. Whenever I am feeling down, I think "shit" that guy has it way worse than me. He can't even hug somebody.

Hope you are getting lots of hugs. Here is a virtual one from TX!

Speedy recovery, K?

Chris,

I don't think we've ever met, but back in the day of Phantom Herd and the Cafe Metro, every buzz in town was talkin about you and your singing. I am a longtime friend of Gary Brandon and play PSG as well up here in SF. So, you gotta get better cause someday I want to play behind you and listen to one of the best voices I have ever heard.
If there is a benefit in the San Francisco area, I want to play it so I hope someone will get in touch should that happen.
Life is a bit messy as Rodney Crowell once said. This is just another one of those messes that needs to be cleaned up. Stay positive and know that there are a lot of people out here who you don't know that wish for your speedy recovery.

Hey, Chris- Just wanted you to know that Tammy and I are pulling for you out here in the "Queen City of the Mountains and Plains", aka "Cowtown" aka Denver. We are sending off a check to help out with the amazing expenses you have to deal with. Tammy's a survivor, about nine years out, and so has a pretty good idea of what you have to endure in order to win this round. Hard to believe that I've been listening to your wonderful music for thirty years now, since the night friends and I happened upon the Phantom Herd at the Cafe Metro! Tammy and I join the rest of the huge circle of your friends (it is great to see so many names I recognize on the messages left here) in wishing you and Julie the best in your complex and tiring battle. We know you have the toughness and humor to do it, and to do it well, brother Gaff. – Doug Johnson & Tammy Hertz

Hi Chris, it's me n' Babs. Hope I'm not repeating this message. I just sent one off to you and then learned I had to do all this dang registration stuff. So I assume you didn't get it.

Anyway, we just learned about your health. Guess I should log on to the H-Bros more often! But Barb and I praying for you. Know that we love you very much. We always think and talk about you and dig your groovy music. Maybe that's why we only see you every ten or fifteen years...it's like we're tired of you after all that thinkin'.

Take care, talk to you soon by way of this electric thing.

Morning Cupcake,
Have you on my mind as always. I just got home from New Orleans French Quarter Fest. I got me a washboard. I didn't realize how "very caucasian" I am until I tried to play it. Sorta like my accordian upside down, only worse. I'm sure I cleared out the hotel. I'm going to practice though so as soon as you feel better, maybe you'll let me sit in. At the back of the stage. Far away from a mic and your band. With earplugs. Or... maybe not.
I heart you and Hoolie,

Good Morning Chris & Julie,
Okay - I'm gonna get kind of sappy here - I'm really not a Bible Thumper but.... I believe all muscians (that are good) have been touched by the hand of God - hence the phrase - God Given Talent - but Chris you obviously have had God's hand on you more than once - Every day I check on you and I'm so touched by all the Love and Support you are receiving from all over the world - it's phenomenal.
I must say though I'm not surprised - I've always knew you were special. Sending All My Love and Good Wished to you and your lovely Julie.

Hello Chris
on this issue I am fully agree with you. but If we want to combat against a dreadful disease like cancer we need a comprehensive knowledge of the cancer symptoms that can lead to the infliction of the disease which would help us to nullify its consequences at the elementary level.

Julie,

I never had the pleasure of meeting your husband, but listening to his music and the few conversations I had with him were all I needed to know that he was a very talented artist and a very special man. My husband, Rhys, has been in the music business most of his life and there are very few people that he respected, admired, and loved in the business as much as Chris. He is deeply saddened today, as am I. Both of us know the world has lost a great talent and a great man, but his music will be with us forever and so will the special memories that he helped to create in so many people's lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Love,

Marilyn and Rhys Clark

I wanted to pass along a note I got from my brother Simo:

This is putting me at a loss for words... I loved that guy... He always handed me a Budweiser with a smile and a smart aleck comment or two... He will be missed, but I do have some of his tunes and I still listen to them often. Like RJ said, RIP Chris.

Favorite Chris Gaffney tales chapter 1

Late 90's Christmas season in Hollywood CA at Jack's Sugar Shack corner of Hollwood & Vine, Chris Gaffney and The Cold Hard Facts are playing a mid-week show there are 6 to 10 people in the house, Chris is dedicating songs to people present by first and last names, "This one goes out to Kent Geib over there cause he said he likes it."... Suddenly 50 Santa Claus' show up, Seems that these Chris Kringles had themselves a great thirst for cocktails and had been satisfying that thirst for hours by the time they hit the Sugar Shack. They drank and danced around and were true sight to behold, One of the Santas was dressed as Dolly Parton from the North Pole and had a 5 foot feather boa and a sky high beehive wig. Feather boa plus candles on the tables... You guessed it, She went up in flames like a oil well fire, Up the boa then catching her petrochemical based wig ablaze, It was spectacular. The band stopped mid song, I heard Chris say "Fucking A , Did you see that shit Wyman?" Beer was used to douse the flames but the smoke was so thick and noxious that the band and all the patrons were forced to head out the door to the clean air of pristine (by comparison) Vine St. "Wow what a story"! you might say to yourself but it goes on. At the exact moment we evacuated the smoke filled bar the faux punk rock band Green Day 's show let out at The Palace next door and all the young puffed up wanna be punk-rockers wandered in our direction, Without warning a full blown rumble erupted between The Santa gang and the Green Day punks, a real donnybrook, It went on for a good half hour till the cops showed up en mass. One Santa was taken away by ambulance and the punk that was responsible for his injuries was handcuffed and sitting on the curb, As we walked passed him to go back into the bar Chris smiled at the kid and said "You're on the naughty list for life now son, beating up Santa and all, I guess it's coal in your Christmas stocking from here on out, I feel bad for you but don't let em find out in jail that you beat up Ol'Saint Nick". Back on stage he just shook his head a few times then began singing "People get ready there's a train a coming you don't need no ticket you just get on board."
